Syed Hussein Alatas

Syed Hussein Alatas was a Malaysian sociologist, public intellectual, and politician whose work examined corruption, colonialism, race, and Malay-Muslim society. He led the Malay Studies Department at the National University of Singapore, later served as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Malaya, and helped establish Gerakan. His influential book *The Myth of the Lazy Native* challenged colonial stereotypes about Southeast Asian peoples.
