Thomas Chalmers

Thomas Chalmers was a Scottish Presbyterian minister, theologian, mathematician, and social reformer whose preaching and work among the urban poor made him a prominent nineteenth-century churchman. He led the evangelical movement that helped bring about the 1843 Disruption and became the first moderator of the Free Church of Scotland. Chalmers also served as the first principal and professor of divinity at New College in Edinburgh, where he continued shaping the Free Church’s theological education.
