Thomas Warton

Thomas Warton was an English poet, critic, and literary historian whose landmark History of English Poetry (1774–81) offered one of the earliest substantial narratives of England’s poetic tradition. An Oxford professor of poetry, he later became Poet Laureate in 1785 and also prepared an influential edition of Milton’s poems. His scholarship helped broaden literary history’s attention to medieval and Renaissance writing.
