Wifredo Lam

Wifredo Lam was a Cuban painter whose work fused Afro-Caribbean heritage, European academic training, and the visual languages of Cubism, Surrealism, and the postwar avant-garde. Moving between Cuba, Europe, and the United States, he developed a distinctive vocabulary of hybrid human, animal, and vegetal forms. His best-known painting, The Jungle (1943), exemplifies his sustained engagement with African diasporic culture and modern art.
