About Willard Boyle
Willard Boyle was a Canadian physicist whose work at Bell Laboratories helped transform how images are captured and stored electronically. In 1969, he and George E. Smith developed the charge-coupled device (CCD), a light-sensitive semiconductor circuit that became fundamental to digital cameras and astronomical imaging. Boyle also supported the Apollo space program and shared the 2009 Nobel Prize in Physics for the CCD’s invention.
