William Booth

William Booth was a British Methodist preacher and evangelist who, with Catherine Booth, founded the Christian Mission in London in 1865. Renamed The Salvation Army in 1878, the movement combined open-air preaching with practical aid for poor and marginalised people. Booth later outlined his approach to social reform in *In Darkest England and the Way Out*, advocating shelters, employment centres and other forms of assistance.
