William Charles Wentworth

William Charles Wentworth was an early colonial New South Wales explorer, barrister, author and statesman. After helping cross the Blue Mountains in 1813, he co-founded The Australian in 1824, using the newspaper to campaign for a freer press, trial by jury and representative government. He later became a leading advocate for responsible government and helped shape New South Wales’s constitutional development.
