William Kentridge

William Kentridge is a South African artist whose practice spans charcoal drawing, printmaking, animated film, theatre, opera, and performance. Born in Johannesburg in 1955, he is especially known for hand-drawn animations built through repeated erasure and revision, a method that gives his images a layered, changeable quality. His work often engages with South African history, politics, science, and literature while preserving ambiguity and uncertainty.
