Zhang Xuecheng

Zhang Xuecheng (1738–1801) was a Qing-dynasty historian and philosopher whose work treated history as both an intellectual discipline and an ethical practice. His major writings include the *Jiaochou tongyi* and *Yuandao*, in which he examined bibliography, historical method, culture, and the relationship between historical knowledge and moral judgment. He is chiefly remembered today as an important philosopher of history in eighteenth-century China.
