Understanding this quote
The speaker presents the soil as more than earth: its warmth, light, and dark, sunburnt appearance seem to reveal traces of an ancient civilization. Among those traces, the Sumerian civilization appears most closely connected to the soil’s character and formation. The passage therefore links the land’s physical appearance with the enduring features of the culture associated with it.
